Overseas Investments and Pension Transfers

It is not uncommon for New Zealanders to have overseas investments. Commonly these are often held in the form of pensions, especially in the United Kingdom and Australia. Migration to New Zealand, working holidays overseas and inheritances can all lead to investment assets being held outside the country.

KiwiSaver Investors Switching Providers

We were rather surprised to read a report from Massey University director of financial planning, Dr Claire Matthews that indicates that many KiwiSaver investors are choosing to transfer out of or between KiwiSaver schemes being run by the country’s five major banks.

The banks collectively had 28,139 members transfer out of their KiwiSaver funds in the year ended 31 March 2012. That represented close to 60% of the 48,000 people that transferred into the banks’ KiwiSaver schemes in the same period.

Smarter KiwiSaver Investing

For most New Zealand investment fund managers, the largest investment that they manage is their range of KiwiSaver products. Some managers have made the conscious decision not to market their own KiwiSaver product, but instead market their skills to a range of KiwiSaver providers. Effectively they are benefiting indirectly from KiwiSaver, without the need to actively market to the public.

Investment Values

All investors like to see the value of their investments increase in value. Unfortunately diversified investment portfolios do not increase in value all the time. Investment returns seldom occur at a constant rate.

Energy Company Listings

Last Friday saw the listing of Mighty River Power (MRP) on both the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges. In light of the risk factors associated with this stock, particularly the geopolitical risk, this should be seen as a successful listing. There are some 110,000 plus direct investors. This includes a large proportion of investors who have not invested on the New Zealand Stock Exchange before. Estimates of the numbers of indirect investors via managed funds, in particular KiwiSaver investors, are greater than 1.1 million.
